Wonder Woman fights Medusa, blinds herself, kicks ass
In Wonder Woman: Eyes of the Gorgon (written by one of my favorite comic book writers, Greg Rucka), Diana is challenged to a battle with Medusa that she is honorably bound to complete. I love how true to Wonder Woman’s mythological roots this story was, and I LOVE how the situation’s handled.
Diana doesn’t try to get out of it. She knows what she is bound to do, and she doesn’t flinch away from it. She never wavers. She faces fighting Medusa head on, covering her eyes with a blindfold. And then when the blindfold falls off, and Medusa thinks she’s one - Diana cuts off a snake from Medusa’s head and shoots its poison into her eyes, blinding herself.
She then proceeds to get back on her feet, and hack the head off of the Gorgon. This is a THIS! moment for women in comics because Wonder Woman does get beat up and seriously injured, but it’s by her own volition. It’s for her own purposes and motivations - hell, blinding herself gives her the advantage in this situation. At every moment during the battle she comports herself with grace and elegance, even when swinging a giant battle axe at a demon’s head. And in the end, yeah, she got the crap beaten out of her. But damn, just look at her on that last page. She knows what she’s done - she knows the weight of what she’s just accomplished. She knows exactly how evil Medusa was.
But she falls to her knees anyway, out of respect for her fallen opponent.
Wonder Woman is the ultimate superhero, in my opinion. She embodies everything that a superhero needs to be: powerful, larger than life, caring and passionate, respectful and decisive.
